Different training levels explained     MTB Skills grid at the different levels

From L to R, talking maintenance problems out on a ride, just back from a ride, navigational skills and grid references and sorting the bikes out for the morning.

Sessions can be tailored to suit your confidence and abilities, and are designed to improve your riding skills and enjoyment of the sport. Superb LandRover mountain bikes are available to hire if required.  Beginner or taster sessions suit the less experienced mountain biker who wishes to develop their skills and confidence.

We cover a range of fundamental skills that will lead on to more technical trail riding and bike handling. The only prerequisite is the ability to ride a bike!  One-to-one or small groups welcome.  We aim to challenge your ideas of what is rideable, leaving you adrenaline stoked, yet with skills to develop on the trails!

Mountain bike skills Training

Mountain biking is rapidly progressing, as new disciplines develop challenging the ideas of what is rideable. Technical advances in equipment and trail building continue to present new challenges and promote the evolution of this varied and interesting sport.

So what is mountain biking really all about?

This exhilarating sport exists in many guises ranging from endurance distance riding to free riding, jumps, drops and downhill. There really is something for everybody to get stuck into! The foundation techniques for all types of riding are similar and once established can be honed to suit your specific riding style and preference.  It’s about getting out there and riding terrain that gives you a great sense of achievement and exhilaration. We can give you direction and instruction to develop your skills to a higher level. We aim to further your mountain biking progression helping you get the most out of your riding.

Foundation Level (1) Training:

One-to-one or in small groups; a chance to evaluate your specific riding ability and look at areas you would like to improve. A great opportunity to establish a fundamental skills base that will lead on to more challenging and exhilarating riding.  Sessions are tailored to help you become more confident by delivering useful techniques that can be applied on a wide range of terrains and trails. Experience gradients, small obstacles, and fast single track to get the adrenaline pumping.

Intermediate Level (2) Training:

Aimed at riders with a competent skills base, wishing to take your riding to the next level. Focus on techniques helpful for enjoying more challenging ground, with elements of technical trail analysis, line choice and obstacle clearance. At this level it is possible to cover more technical sections and as your confidence develops, we can begin to really push the limits of your riding ability.

Advanced Level (3) Training:

This course really begins to expand your wider and more varied mountain bike experiences. The aim is to polish skills in all riding environments, improving your smooth trail riding transitions and competent clearance of obstacles. At this level we begin to introduce elements of more extreme riding;  some of our training uses one of Britain's premier dirt jumping facilities, just a mile away, called The Track!

There are now two different types of awards to aim for ..

There are 3 levels of Wheelie Awards which are just about riding skills .. starting from a level that everyone who can stay upright on a bike can achieve. Bumps; corners; uphills; descents and gears are all in here and by the time you reach the last level, your riding will be sorted and you will be confident to ride most of what is out there. These are ideal for groups whether in a 'one off' single taster session or a small numbers of sessions, with the focus on riding skills and enjoyment. The sessions run shouldn't change too much from what we provide now, covering the range of riding skills, but it is important that the group members are enjoying what they are doing as they learn each element and then move onto the next.

The Right Track Awards extend to cover aspects of mountain biking beyond just riding.  Where you can ride; finding your way; how to fix your bike and what to do if something goes wrong is all included.  The elements of navigation; safety; route preparation; maintenance and even helping out and participating in mountain bike events are also included to give participants a full flavour of mountain biking and what it can offer them in life.  The Right Track Awards integrate the riding aspects of the Wheelie Awards within them, but also extend them to include high level skills like jumps and north shore in two further levels hence there being 5 Right Track Award Levels and only 3 Wheelie Award Levels.
